5 Reasons to buy a 10ft cabin height refrigerated truck over a van

Are you deciding between a refrigerated van and a 10ft truck for cold chain delivery..

Are you deciding between a refrigerated van and a 10ft truck for cold chain delivery in Singapore? Choosing the right small refrigerated vehicle can make or break your cold chain delivery operations.

With more businesses entering the frozen and chilled goods sector, understanding the difference between a van and a cabin height truck is key to making a smart investment. Here’s 5 reasons why we believe a 10ft cabin height refrigerated truck may be the better choice for your needs.

Greater payload

Payload refers to the permissible weight of goods that can be carried. Due to the higher GVW(Gross vehicle weight) of trucks, they are able to carry more. For vans, the payload may fall in the region of around 800kg on average. For a cabin height refrigerated truck, it could be as high as 2000kg.

Greater cooling performance

Due to space constraints, the refrigeration system that can be installed onto a van has a smaller capacity compared to that of a truck.

Typically, refrigeration systems on newer vans (Euro 6) can only achieve chiller temperature, up to around 10 to 12°C.   For faster temperature pull down and ability to reach freezer temperatures, choose a cabin height truck.

Ability to enter multi storey carparks

Most multi storey carparks in Singapore have an entry height limit of 2m. Both a refrigerated van and cabin height refrigerated truck can comfortably enter into one.

Comparative initial cost outlay

The selling price of 10ft trucks are lower than vans. When you factor in conversion to refrigeration for the truck and van, the prices are about similar. For the above tradeoffs listed above, it is worthwhile considering a cabin height truck.

Same COE category

Both vehicle types fall into category C COE, so if you are looking to maximise carrying capacity per COE dollar, a cabin height truck is a no brainer.

Bonus : when you should consider a refrigerated van

We have listed our reasons why a cabin height truck is more suitable for you, but there are reasons for purchasing a refrigerated van as well.

When to consider a refrigerated van instead:

  • You’re delivering small-volume items that don’t require deep freezing
  • You prioritize compact vehicle aesthetics over cargo size
  • You plan to drive the vehicle through its full COE lifespan
  • You don’t intend to resell, as insulated vans usually have low resale value due to deconversion costs and wear-and-tear

Beginners guide to truck refrigeration in Singapore

In 2024, the statistics released by LTA for total commercial vehicle registrations showed that...

In 2024, the statistics released by LTA for total commercial vehicle registrations showed that refrigerated vehicles made up only 4.18% of the total of 143,209 [Source : LTA]. If you are reading this, you are likely about to join a very niche yet important sector serving Singapore’s cold chain industry.

Introduction

Businesses use refrigerated trucks to transport temperature sensitive products from point to point.  Some examples of products include :

  • Frozen and chilled food
  • Chemicals
  • Certain vaccines
  • Electronics like semiconductors

Before diving further, it is important to note that the main function of refrigerated trucks is to maintain the temperature of the product it is carrying, and not to pull down the product temperature.

Common terms used to refer to refrigerated trucks in the industry are :

  • Freezer/chiller truck
  • Reefer truck
  • Cold truck

All the terms refer to trucks fitted with an insulated box and a refrigeration system.

What options are available for cold chain transport?

In Singapore, you can choose to buy either a refrigerated truck or refrigerated van to transport your goods.

Due to its limited cargo space, a refrigerated van is only suitable for small volume transportation. However, if this sounds perfect for you, read our article 5 reasons to buy a 10ft cabin height refrigerated truck over a van before you make a decision.

4 things to consider when buying a refrigerated truck

Buying a new refrigerated truck is a big investment which warrants careful thinking. For example, knowing your cargo volume and cargo temperature would enable you not to overspec your box and system. Here, we’ve put together this list of items to consider when making your purchase.

Deciding on the size of box

In addition to your budget, these 2 other factors will affect your box sizing.

The make and model of the truck you purchased

LTA has specific restrictions on the dimension limits for the refrigerated box that must be followed.

Your cargo volume and cargo platform

This looks at how much cargo you carry per trip. You may carry them in boxes, baskets, rollcages or pallets. What are their dimensions? It is helpful to provide your box manufacturer with this info in order for them to design the size of the box.

At Hwee Jan, we have the ability to customize the box to meet your exact specification.

Deciding on the refrigeration system

The next thing you should know is the temperature your product requires. Generally, the larger the box, the more powerful the system required. A more powerful system helps to :

  1. precool the container faster before deliveries
  2. overcome heat gain quicker when there are frequent door openings during unloading.

There is no need to install the most powerful systems on trucks carrying products with less sensitive temperature requirements like chilled beverages and vegetables, for example.

Quality and specifications of material

If you plan to use your refrigerated truck throughout its 10 year COE lifespan, it is worthwhile considering the following.

Box materials

Choose Extruded polysterene foam (XPS) when possible as the density of this foam type provides excellent mechanical and insulation strength. High mechanical strength is crucial because it provides resistance to bending under heavy load. This type of foam also provides extremely low water absorption.

Hwee Jan’s insulated box is made of high grade XPS which significantly contributes to maximum operation efficiency and longevity.

Water absorption increases the weight of the box over time, which consumes more diesel. It also affects temperature pull down speed, because the refrigeration system will cool the water first.

Refrigeration system

Selecting a reliable and reputed refrigeration system brand is also critical to efficient operations and longevity. With less breakdowns, less needs to be spent on repairs and more time can be spent on deliveries.

With decades of experience in truck refrigeration and Japanese engineering reliability, Mitsubishi truck refrigeration systems is the ideal partner for your transportation.

Food Hygiene

For added peace of mind, look for panels which carry hygiene certifications. This builds trust and assurance to your end user as well. For example, Hwee Jan’s panels are HACCP certified and USDA/FSIS approved.

Servicing the refrigerated truck : What to know

In order to keep the freezer truck running in optimal condition, regular servicing is a must. The most common drawback from infrequent servicing is that the truck refrigeration system will encounter slow temperature pull down, or failure to achieve the set temperature.

The systems servicing intervals will depend on the usage intensity. Generally, the higher number of hours used a day, the more frequent you should go for servicing.

At Hwee Jan, we recommend our systems be serviced once a year at minimum. During servicing, some of the jobs we perform include :

  • Tightening the compressor belt
  • Tightening the compressor bearing
  • Tightening the idler bearing
  • Checking of fan speed
  • Washing the condenser
  • Conducting temperature testing

For complete peace of mind, we recommend purchasing our Comprehensive Maintenance Package. Contact us to enquire.

Moving to the future : Electric vehicles

In line with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, ICE (Internal combustion engine) vehicles will be slowly phased out from the roads. As a result, two scenarios have unfolded.

a)you might be incentivized to purchase an electric truck with the available government grants. Fully electric refrigeration systems thus are also available in the market to work specially with such vehicles.

b) During this transition period, you might still be operating your existing diesel truck or planning to buy a new diesel truck, while hoping to adopt sustainable practices.

Do Contact us for solutions for both scenarios or learn more about what we exhibited at FHA 2025.

Some electric vehicles come with an EPTO (Electric power takeoff), a device that allows conventional direct driven (non-electric) refrigeration systems to operate with electric vehicles. Do check with your truck agent for further details.

Is the BESS right for your fleet?

If you are operating freezer trucks in Singapore—whether diesel-powered or fully electric..

If you are operating freezer trucks in Singapore—whether diesel-powered or fully electric—you may be wondering how to cut fuel costs, improve mileage, enhance sustainability, and prepare your fleet for the future. One solution is the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what the BESS is, how it works with both diesel and electric trucks, and whether it might be the right investment for your operations and sustainability goals.

Introduction

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a modular solution that consists of:

  • A control box with BMS to power both AC and DC refrigeration system
  • Up to four battery packs for storing energy.

The BESS is designed to support the heavy energy demands of refrigeration units on freezer trucks in Singapore’s logistics industry.

Why Use BESS on Diesel Trucks?

Refrigeration systems consume diesel, either through its connection with the engine’s crankshaft, or directly from the diesel tank (for self powered systems).

By installing the BESS, you can:

  • Run your refrigeration unit using electricity instead of diesel.
  • Cut diesel consumption and lower overall operating costs.
  • Reduce emissions, aligning with sustainability requirements.

When the battery level is low, the system switches seamlessly to the diesel supply, avoiding break of cold chain and eliminating range anxiety.

Why Use BESS on Electric Trucks?

Non electric refrigeration units are unable to tap into the battery power supply of an electric truck, therefore, the only way to run them is via the BESS. The exception is only for those electric trucks that come installed with an Electric Power Takeoff (EPTO), which may work with certain types of non electric refrigeration systems.

Another benefit of installing the BESS on electric trucks is that the vehicles specified range is unaffected.

How long does a battery last?

Currently, the rated capacity per battery is 20kWh. The battery life depends on the power rating of the refrigeration unit. For example, taking a trailer refrigeration unit’s power rating at 5kW, each battery can power the refrigeration unit for roughly 4 hours continuously[20kWh/5kW].

Charging the BESS: How Long Does it Take?

The BESS can be charged using:

  • CCS2 AC/DC charging,
  • Ceeform 415V three-phase AC supply, or
  • Solar panels (we also provide solar panel options to complement the BESS).

As a rough guide and based on common power ratings of chargers in Singapore, a full charge using CCS2 AC 22kW charger takes an estimated 60 mins. Charging with DC 50kW will take roughly 35mins.

Installation Considerations

The BESS can be installed on all trucks, and compatible with all refrigeration units, subject to space availability. Before confirmation, our team will conduct a vehicle study to confirm suitability.

How the BESS Improves Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t just about meeting regulations—it’s also about reducing long-term costs, showing responsibility to customers, partners and ourselves. Installing the BESS contributes to greener operations in several ways:

1.Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Every litre of diesel saved avoids the release of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other pollutants. This directly lowers your fleet’s carbon footprint, helping your company move closer to sustainability goals.

2.Renewable Energy Integration

Because the BESS can be charged by solar panels, part of your refrigeration system can run on clean, renewable energy. This reduces reliance on the grid and supports Singapore’s national push toward renewable adoption.

3.Future-Proofing Your Business

Many industries and clients now expect suppliers to show tangible sustainability action. A fleet equipped with BESS demonstrates a commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, which can strengthen business reputation and customer trust.

Government Support: EDG Grant

To make adoption easier, the Enterprise Development Grant (EDG) currently covers up to 50% of approved costs for businesses to upgrade, innovate, grow and transform their business.

⚠️ This grant is ending soon, so businesses considering the BESS should act quickly to benefit from this funding support.

Is the BESS Right for You?

The BESS is most practical if you:

  • Operate large freezer trucks (24 ft and above) running a self powered refrigeration system.
  • Want to reduce diesel consumption on self-powered refrigeration systems.
  • Run electric trucks but use a non electric refrigeration system.

Next Steps

If you are considering the BESS for your fleet:

  • Book a feasibility study with our team—we’ll assess your truck space and energy needs.
  • Explore financing options, including the EDG grant.

Hwee Jan’s green building transformation: from efficiency to excellence

At Hwee Jan, we believe sustainability is not just a buzzword — it’s a responsibility. That’s why we’ve made a bold move to significantly reduce our carbon footprint while future-proofing our facilities.

We’re proud to share that our factory has undergone a complete green transformation — and the results speak for themselves.

Harnessing the sun: 590 solar panels installed

In our biggest energy shift to date, we installed 590 pieces of high-efficiency monocrystalline bifacial solar modules, each rated at 585Wp. This brings our total solar capacity to 345.15 kWp, generating an impressive 431,000 kWh per year — enough to fully power our daily operations.

The best part? Our system is already meeting 100% of our energy needs, and we’ve still left room for more panels in future phases.

Upgrading to 5-tick air conditioning systems

As part of our energy efficiency overhaul, we replaced all outdated air conditioning units (previously ranging from 1- to 3-tick efficiency ratings) with top-rated 5-tick models. These new units not only reduce energy consumption but also improve cooling performance for our employees and equipment.

Switching to LED lighting

Lighting also plays a major role in building energy usage. We replaced all 319 non-LED lights throughout the facility with energy-efficient LED alternatives. This simple but impactful move significantly lowered our electricity usage and improved workplace illumination.

BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy (SLE)

These upgrades have culminated in our proudest achievement yet — earning the BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy (SLE) award, Singapore’s highest green building certification.

This award is a testament to our commitment to sustainable infrastructure and operational excellence, recognizing organizations that go beyond compliance to drive real change.

Our commitment to a greener future

Our green transformation is just the beginning. We see sustainability as a continuous journey and will keep investing in technologies and practices that reduce waste, save energy, and protect our planet — one initiative at a time.

Through solar power integration and energy-efficient upgrades, we’ve shown that even industrial manufacturers can play a vital role in Singapore’s transition to a low-carbon future. We hope our journey encourages more businesses in supporting industries to step forward too.
