Is the BESS right for your fleet?

Table of Contents

If you are operating freezer trucks in Singapore—whether diesel-powered or fully electric—you may be wondering how to cut fuel costs, improve mileage, enhance sustainability, and prepare your fleet for the future. One solution is the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what the BESS is, how it works with both diesel and electric trucks, and whether it might be the right investment for your operations and sustainability goals.

Introduction

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a modular solution that consists of:

  • A control box with BMS to power both AC and DC refrigeration system
  • Up to four battery packs for storing energy.

The BESS is designed to support the heavy energy demands of refrigeration units on freezer trucks in Singapore’s logistics industry.

Why Use BESS on Diesel Trucks?

Refrigeration systems consume diesel, either through its connection with the engine’s crankshaft, or directly from the diesel tank (for self powered systems).

By installing the BESS, you can:

  • Run your refrigeration unit using electricity instead of diesel.
  • Cut diesel consumption and lower overall operating costs.
  • Reduce emissions, aligning with sustainability requirements.

When the battery level is low, the system switches seamlessly to the diesel supply, avoiding break of cold chain and eliminating range anxiety.

Why Use BESS on Electric Trucks?

Non electric refrigeration units are unable to tap into the battery power supply of an electric truck, therefore, the only way to run them is via the BESS. The exception is only for those electric trucks that come installed with an Electric Power Takeoff (EPTO), which may work with certain types of non electric refrigeration systems.

Another benefit of installing the BESS on electric trucks is that the vehicles specified range is unaffected.

How long does a battery last?

Currently, the rated capacity per battery is 20kWh. The battery life depends on the power rating of the refrigeration unit. For example, taking a trailer refrigeration unit’s power rating at 5kW, each battery can power the refrigeration unit for roughly 4 hours continuously[20kWh/5kW].

Charging the BESS: How Long Does it Take?

The BESS can be charged using:

  • CCS2 AC/DC charging,
  • Ceeform 415V three-phase AC supply, or
  • Solar panels (we also provide solar panel options to complement the BESS).

As a rough guide and based on common power ratings of chargers in Singapore, a full charge using CCS2 AC 22kW charger takes an estimated 60 mins. Charging with DC 50kW will take roughly 35mins.

Installation Considerations

The BESS can be installed on all trucks, and compatible with all refrigeration units, subject to space availability. Before confirmation, our team will conduct a vehicle study to confirm suitability.

How the BESS Improves Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t just about meeting regulations—it’s also about reducing long-term costs, showing responsibility to customers, partners and ourselves. Installing the BESS contributes to greener operations in several ways:

1.Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Every litre of diesel saved avoids the release of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other pollutants. This directly lowers your fleet’s carbon footprint, helping your company move closer to sustainability goals.

2.Renewable Energy Integration

Because the BESS can be charged by solar panels, part of your refrigeration system can run on clean, renewable energy. This reduces reliance on the grid and supports Singapore’s national push toward renewable adoption.

3.Future-Proofing Your Business

Many industries and clients now expect suppliers to show tangible sustainability action. A fleet equipped with BESS demonstrates a commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, which can strengthen business reputation and customer trust.

Government Support: EDG Grant

To make adoption easier, the Enterprise Development Grant (EDG) currently covers up to 50% of approved costs for businesses to upgrade, innovate, grow and transform their business.

⚠️ This grant is ending soon, so businesses considering the BESS should act quickly to benefit from this funding support.

Is the BESS Right for You?

The BESS is most practical if you:

  • Operate large freezer trucks (24 ft and above) running a self powered refrigeration system.
  • Want to reduce diesel consumption on self-powered refrigeration systems.
  • Run electric trucks but use a non electric refrigeration system.

Next Steps
